Delete Constraints
Overview
Delete Constraints removes assembly constraints and joints from the selected component occurrences. This is useful for quickly clearing relationships so you can reposition or reconfigure components without having to hunt through constraints one-by-one.
Assemblies can accumulate unnecessary or conflicting constraints over time, making edits difficult. This command provides a fast reset to a “free” state so you can re-apply the correct connections.
How It Works
- Select one or more components in the assembly.
- Run Delete Constraints.
- The command deletes constraints/joints associated with the selected components (as applicable).
Usage Instructions
- Open your assembly in Inventor.
- Select the components to clear of constraints.
- Click Delete Constraints in the Placement panel.
- Verify that the components are now free to move (unless other constraints still apply).
Troubleshooting
- Nothing is deleted: Ensure the correct components are selected and that they actually have constraints/joints.
- Some constraints remain: Constraints involving other occurrences may still be present depending on how they are defined; review remaining constraints in the browser.
- Cannot delete: Check for locked/suppressed/read-only components or external references that prevent deletion.
Examples
Refactor an assembly: Remove constraints before repositioning components for a new layout.
Resolve conflicts: Clear constraints to troubleshoot and fix movement or alignment issues.
Prepare for new relationships: Delete existing constraints before applying new joints or constraints.
